Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack

The thought behind this song occurred to me the day before yesterday when I posted that song from the lovely Eydie Gormé.   I thought about posting this tune from Joe Ely as a postscript to the Eydie post and then thought better of it, not wanting to take anything away from "Piel Canela."  Today's another day, however...

Joe's wrong in my particular case, as The First Mrs. Pennington DID speak Spanish to me on occasion, most o' which cannot be repeated on a PG-13 rated blog.  She DID broaden my vocabulary, though.

Apropos o' not much... it's another indoor Happy Hour today.  While it's warm enough outside (in the mid-50s), the wind she's howling and the sky is cloudy, both conditions conspiring to make it less than comfortable on the verandah.  We'll just have to muddle through, I suppose.

  1. Joe is a Lubbock boy. Toby and I use to go hear him at the Cotton Club. In fact, our first date was at the CC to hear Joe Ely. The CC was out in the country - a BYOB type place. It was wise to bring your own knife or gun too - just kiddin', but it was a rough place. Lots of good memories there.

Tommy Hancock and the Supernatural Family Band also used to play at the CC. Tommy brought his family to Red River and lived there for a while. Then he moved on to Austin where his family did very well in the music business. His wife and daughter were the Texana Dames.

    1. Your first date? Joe Ely? How VERY cool. TSMP and I went to a concert on our first date, too, but that was in Tokyo with a bunch of no-name local bands... it was an all-day outdoor festival affair... and I can't remember a single band's name. But, back to Ely... I saw him for the first time in London sometime between 1980 and 1983 when a Brit friend of mine turned me on to him (seriously!). I've seen him more than a few times since, the last time bein' in Austin.

  2. NOTHING like Texas/Louisiana dive bars! There's a place in Opelousas, La called "Slim's Y-ki-ki" a Zyedco dance-hall (since mid 70s--been in existance since 1947--was originally a rock& roll place in early 60s when I was in college w. bands like Cookie & the Cupcakes, etc. My wife is from Opelousas, so I know the place WELL, lol) where @ 0800 on Sat morn the place is packed with a band and couples eatin' drinkin' and dancin' AND drinkin' to the two-step.--so famous BBC once did a special on it, lol! (Google it!)

    1. I googled Slim's and was semi-surprised at the number of "... Live at Slim's" vids I found. That said, I ALWAYS had my best nights out at dive bars. I used to be a connoisseur of the type, in the way-back. Not so much, today.

    2. There are still two shit-kicker cowboy dive bars in New Orleans (one on the river-side of Canal St in Mid-City and one in the Quarter off Decatur St both named the "Topaz" where, in the 60s when I was in college real cowoy types (in N,O!--who'd of thunk it?) drank long-neck beers and hard liquor was served in small shot-sized paper cups @ TWENTY-FIVE (25!) cents a shot! The first time I took a date to one she--upon beginning to enter the door--took one look inside and placed both hands on either side of the door frame and refused to go. I had to bump her from behind to force her inside. LOL!

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
