Broadening XLIX

Yet another variation on that Oktoberfest theme...

The Bros haven't sampled the beer, but their commentariat weighs in with 378 reviews, the average of which is 71/100... making the beer average, I suppose.  Me?  It's pleasant, sweet to the point o' almost-too-sweet, and sufficiently malty.  I still prefer Shiner's and Sammy Adams' takes on the genre, though.

Wow... the next edition of "Broadening" will be our 50th.  I'd like to say that's a lotta beer, but we've also used the title for new booze and cigars.  What-EVAH... it's all part o' the Good Life, innit?

  2. Ah, Deutsches Bier and Oktoberfest. This is one of those times of the year that I miss Germany. An American colleague of my acquaintance once asked our Bavarian colleague what his favorite beer was. Martin (the Bavarian) answered "Freibier". Our American co-worker looked somewhat puzzled when the rest of us started to chuckle. Of course Martin was something of a comedian. He actually spent money to have a Fußgängerschein made up. Looked just like a German driver's license. When he showed this to the same American co-worker (okay, dude was an easy target) the guy looked puzzled and asked Martin what it was, Martin said, "It's a walking license. Open it." Of course when you opened it, rather than a picture of Martin's face, there was a picture of Martin's feet, sans shoes and socks. The rest of us found this hysterical. For those of you who think Germans have no sense of humor, think again. Oh wait, we were talking about beer weren't we?

    1. Heh. Freibier is right up there among my faves, too. I freely (heh) admit I'm a beer snob and usually turn my nose up at BuMilCoors products (except for Blue Moon). There are exceptions, though... like when SN1 and I went to a Wings game in St. Louis this year and had passes to the Blue Note Club, which included all the free beer we could drink, all night long. The only catch was there were only two beers on tap: Bud Light and Bud Select. It's amazing how much better Bud Select tastes when it's FREE... and it got pretty drunk out that night. REALLY drunk, actually.

  3. I really liked the Alaskan Summer Kolsch that Toby bought, and I rarely like such stuff. Although, it is a summer beer and not so much a fall beer. I hope you can find some in the great American Desert.

    1. I read that Kolsch beer is a lot like Wit beer, which is one of my favorite styles. I'm keeping my eyes open.

  4. I absolutely love Sam Adams Octoberfest this year. Last year, I didn't care for it, but whatever they did this year, it's fantastic.

  5. I know I've said this before, but I'll probably say it every time you use that mug, so get used to it. I absolutely love that mug.

"Hey, Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit outta my hat!"

"But, Bullwinkle, that trick NEVER works!"

    "This time for sure..."
