Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack

Steely Dan...

I know this super highway
This bright familiar sun
I guess that I'm the lucky one
Who wrote that tired sea song
Set on this peaceful shore
You think you've heard this one before

Well the danger on the rocks is surely past
Still I remain tied to the mast
Could it be that I have found my home at last
Home at last
Yeah, yet another exercise in self-absorption.  But... doesn't this tune fit our current situation?  We are "tied to the mast," so to speak, yet I have this feeling that we've found our home at last.  There will be much gnashing and thrashing over the course of the next few weeks or months on the subject at hand, said subject bein' relocate?  Or not?

On another note... we called Happy Hour early today for it is warm.  Quite warm... and some might call it "hot," present company excepted.  Is this hot in your world, Gentle Reader, or merely warm?

We did G&T's for Happy Hour today, which is where I like to go on warm summer days.  That said, I think After Dinner Whiskey Hour will be quite pleasant this evening.  It's looking to get downright balmy once the sun goes down.

  1. Oh man...here we go! To relocate, or not to relocate?!?!?!

My friend, one good/great thing about being a geezer, and unattached is that you can do whatever the hell you want to (or have the energy to).

Life is a moveable feast. In reference to the "EIP" deal mentioned in the below post...The blog header, "EIRR" would not change the URL, any more than Major Buck getting a different rank changed his...and I'd still look at your blog, even if you happened to be exiled just about anywhere, unless you got exiled in Arkansas. The horror would be too much to bear.

Some days, I really envy you. Some days I'm VERY happy I'm not you. The last two days have been a mixed bag of smugness, and envy. Trust me on that one...

    1. I won't go there, as far as the "two days" thang goes. I WILL say it's pretty good bein' me. And thanks for the vote o' confidence... srsly.

  2. Yes - that would be considered hot in these parts. Enough for me to not venture outside for more than a few seconds - air conditioned house to air conditioned car to air conditioned building somewhere.

  3. Friday was downright cool around here, but by Saturday afternoon, things were heating up. At least the wind was not blowing so hard that things were miserable. In fact, the light breeze made for a nice Sat. Today is humid, though.

Moving - tough decision. All those reasons to move to a city are understandable - I know the pull. I've often wondered how a "man of the world" like yourself could be happy in exile. You seem like you would enjoy the pleasures and places and entertainment of city life. There would be so much more life in Alb. Life, family, friends, conveniences - those things are good.

Still, for me, it is a city with traffic, lots of people, gangs, problemas, higher cost of living, my dogs couldn't bark out loud, etc. No matter what you choose, I will read you and stop by when I'm in town - whichever town.

Well, lemmee say this about that: P-Ville was like a breath of fresh air after two and a half years in SFO. NO traffic, very few leftards, reasonable cost o' living, and friendly people. I go on quite a bit about the downsides of small-town living, but there ARE advantages. I'm still up in the air about this.

  4. It's not hot here until it's above 95 ...at least according to the Weather Service.

    1. 95 is pretty close to hot in MY book, but it was pretty pleasant outdoors yesterday.

Re: Happy Hour and G&Ts. I loves me some G&Ts too, but I find after a couple or three my mouth drys out--at which pointy I switch to Rum (white) and Tonics--a drink that doesn't parch the mouth as much--you outta try 'em. .Another good hot wx drink is a vodka gimlet. Keep a couple of glasses in the freezer and you're in business. I can't always drink them all-nite, tho, as they tend to become to sweetish-sour after a while. But the first few are sure a great refresher

(Back in summer of '64 I was in Cali's Central Valley south of Fresno staging out of my Aunt's house in Dinuba and playing tennis tournaments up & down the valley and coast & SF. I would practice during the week
at the Country Club in little town up the road of Reedley with the club pro--for free-- who hailed from NJ and with whom I hit it off. Talk about Vodka Gimlet Happy Hours! As a young bachelor, he lived in a guest house behind some local execs estate where we would retire after a long day on the court. But not before hitting the pool [remember, temps in the Central Valley in Jul&Aug can be 110 ambient air and 130 on the courts--makes for one helluva hot day] thence to "Me and Eds" Pizza parlor --the forerunner of Shakeys--a "Me & Eds Special" is still on the menu at Shakeys--for a Pitcher or two of Draft, then to Safeway to buy ground lamb [MUY superior to ground beef for grilling!]for some grilled lamb-burgers & salad on the patio under the Wisteria Arbor as we sipped vodka gimlets and talked the evening away into the wee hrs with friends who dropped by from the Club. [And of course one nice thing about living in a desert climate is that evening temps drop to sweater wx and no humidity.] One HELLUVA an idyllic summer that was!)

    1. That DOES sound like one helluva summer, Virgil. That said, I can't imagine anyone wanting to play tennis in that kinda heat.

You're slipping again... EVERY year when I mention G&T's you tell me about rum and tonics. Yanno? ;-)

  6. Nah -- that's not hot, but it feels hot. It starts feeling hot to me when it tops 80 or so.

The lure of family and more conveniences might just tip the scales (says the woman who will move north to "stinkin' Arkansas" to be close to family). So, I won't be in exile and Andy won't have to worry about me -- I know the secret!

Not an easy decision to make after you found your nice apartment and nice neighbors. We'll follow you on down that road, though.

    1. If it's 94 in N'Awlins it's HOT. G'wan... ask me how I know!

The lure is more on the conveniences/amenities side, Moogie. The Family SN1 will be moving to VA when Buck gets back from the desert.

  7. You keep track, eh? You've got a mind like a Steel Trap, Buck--ME, otoh, lol. But have you ever tried rum & tonic, fella? Give us the taste-test. REPORT, mister! :)

Oh, and the heat? BLAST-Furnace time, for sure (but it's a dry heat, right? lol) Just the oppo of Louisiana, where the humidity kills you. Instead of using sweat-band wrist-lets to soak up the perspiration for a better racquet grip, I'd constantly soak 'em in ice-water to prevent heat-stroke and wear 'em on both wrists, lol.)

I have no rum in the likker-locker, Virg. OTOH, I COULD use it to make mojitos, another summertime fave.

The heat WAS dry, now that you mention it. ;-)

  8. PS: And whether in hot, humid, Louisiana or in the blast-furnace desert desert if one is a serious tennis player and in shape, one is ALWAYS assured of an open court mid-after-noon, lol. One of the "advantages" of youth and being a serious competitive player.....if you can find an equally idiotic partner to coax out onto the court, that is, lol.

    1. You never would have coaxed ME in that kinda heat.
