More Guitar Wars... Otherwise Known As...

Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack.  The BEST thing about this particular war is NOone loses and everybody wins.  You should check out Dan's flat-pickin' selections... they're beauties.

But here's our latest salvo in the war... Ry Cooder:

The guitar break occurs around 2:45.  I love Mr. Cooder for his unique tunings and devotion to roots music.  He also has some of the BEST backup singers in the music bid'niz.  One more...

The above is Ry with the inimitable David Lindley, another guitarist (and virtuoso on other instruments as well) whose work I've posted in the past.  BTW... we have defined a Ry Cooder station on Pandora.  And that's what we'll be listening to once we park our tired ol' ass out under the awning... about four minutes from now.

  1. That brought back some memories. The Three Faces West, specifically Rick Fowler - famous band in RR - used to sing this, but I think they did it better. But then I was younger and I have slept since then.

  2. I've never heard anyone cover this tune, Lou. Three Faces West had good taste.

  3. Buck, Like you said, everybody wins! I hadn't heard about Ry Cooder before. Nor Lindley. Both are super guitarists. I'll be looking for more by these guys. And any song about automobiles pushes my buttons. "Here I am standing in nothing but rubber heels." Some of the lyrics (she can play with your keys, etc.) kinda remind me of "Dynaflow Blues" (was that Son House?). These guys are top notch.

  4. Okay...I'm with Dan...never heard of Ry Cooder.

But, I just recently heard of Chet Atkins...so, give me time.

I am way out of my league in the Guitar War.

  5. Buck,

For some reason, there are still young guys who've never heard of this guy. Clarence White, with his brother Roland on Mandolin, and a cast of thousands including Byron Berline on fiddle and Alan Munde playing 5-string.

Tony Rice's boyhood hero, the soulfullest motherfucker of 'em all, with about a hundred developmental choruses of I Am A Pilgrim followed by I Can Play Faster Than You Can, displayed here in Soldier's Joy:

  6. Dan: A friend introduced me to Cooder back in the '70s and I've been a fan ever since. Discovered Lindley via J. Browne during my "sensitive seventies guy" period. Both remain staples in the household...

Andy: I guess this is a classic case of "never too old," eh? See below...

And a few OLD guys, as well. ;-) Thanks for this, Rob.
