Yup.

A tweet from Mr. Lileks:
Lileks: I'm taking up a collection to hire a hit man to deal with the Douche Family in that Toyota "Swagger Wagon" Sienna ad. Anyone in?
Oh Hell yes I'm in! Have you seen that stupid ad? No? Take a look...
Doesn't Toyota have enough problems? What the Hell are they thinking? Stupid, stupid, stupid...

Today's hockey piece comes from Ethan Sherwood Strauss, writing at Salon. The article reinforces my thoughts about the grudge match that will be the gold medal game in this tournament. Here's an excerpt:
He'll (Ovechkin) skate for Russia for the first time in the Vancouver Olympics Tuesday night at midnight EST against Latvia. (ed: and has one goal, as we write. The Rooshians are looking awesome against a pretty good Latvian team.)
Three decades after the "Miracle on Ice," U.S. and Russian sports fans are living vicariously through the same athlete. We're serendipitously united in a way not seen since Rocky Balboa ended the Cold War. Not all is cheery, though. There's an ominous force up north and it's looking for trouble. Behind the Maple Curtain, Canadians are gnashing their teeth at every Ovechkin plaudit.
It may come as a surprise to puck virgins, but the Canada-Russia hockey feud rivals the Cold War in acrimony. In fact, Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent joined NATO specifically to protect against a hockey-motivated Soviet attack (or to join other Western nations interested in building a nuclear holocaust bulwark; history is subjective).Heh. You should read the whole thing, even if you're not a hockey fan and especially if you ARE (a fan). The piece is simply superlative writing. Funny, too.
There is such a thing as too fast. Gig speed is desinged to only get Viagra and work from home ad to us quicker! LOL
ReplyDeleteGig is downspeed (downloading stuff...like ads). Welcome to Web 2.0!
Buck! That ad is utterly hilarious! Well, sure I want to shoot them, but isn't that the point?
ReplyDelete(I've never seen it before, so maybe it becomes hideous with repeated viewings?)
Faster internet...oops I just drooled on my keyboard.
ReplyDeleteThe Toyota ad is stupid, but I would still buy a swagger wagon if I were a young family type.
Thanks to your posting times of the games, I was able to catch some of the Canada vs Norway game, but after about the third goal, I moved on. Please post more times - I depend on you for my Olympic picks :)
The only trouble with the faster internet connection (which I don't have a problem with) is that you are still connected to many sites that aren't on it, so despite them having the capability to download faster it won't really be faster unless you are on a slow connection now.
ReplyDeleteIts like having huge water pipes with no water pressure. Sure, you can get more water to flow to through the pipes but its just potential.
Half a million locations is the upper end, so till you get many other networks going fiber optic, (which is another thing that will take a decent amount of time to get installed) it will be about the same. The real speed will come from the lack of people using their main directing servers.
This would be great, but figure on it taking years to develop. Not sure I really would want to have anything to do with Google either. There is just something that feels unclean about them.
RLM: Too fast is almost fast enough.
ReplyDeleteJim: The Toyota ad is relatively new and there are several of them... all of which make me gag.
Lou: I thought Norway was gonna make a game of it after the first period, which was scoreless. Then the Canadians got their act together and the game became a blow-out.
Old Goat: You make a good point. I have a 4-Mbps fiber connection and some sites are slow enough to make me think I'm on dial-up. It's that ol' hot rodder's saying: "Speed costs. How fast do ya wanna go?" Most content providers aren't that concerned with speed.
Oh... you had a blog about internet stuff and Toyota? Didn't notice.
ReplyDeleteHockey... oh my oh dear oh my... its gonna be a great lead up. Canada masacred Norway by the second period was over. It was almost humiliating but secretly joyous at the same time. The US did defeat the Swiss Team but with much less of a gapping hole in the scores. Russia... well I already knew they would destroy a fairly decent Latvian team... but it was nice to see they got to score (Latvia) twice on the Great Russia.
But I am just itching for a Crosby/Ovechkin match-up. Those two have had a rivalry for a while now... so to see them two go head to head... oh man alive!!! I don't think my heart could handle the suspense!
It's starting to get VERY interesting in these here parts!!! It should be amazing next week in the Athletes Village... I hope I get to see one or two of the players and see how the atmosphere is!!
Canada masacred Norway by the second period was over.
ReplyDeleteDid you watch the game, KC? It was certainly in doubt at the end of the first period, what with no score. It took your boys a lil bit o' time to get their act together. As far as the Crosby/Ovechkin match up... the ol' "be careful what you wish for" saying most certainly applies. ;-)
About Team USA... no one really expects them to do much. But that's the beauty of being an underdog, innit? No pressure.
We were just playing 'nice' during the first period. We can't do that against Russia if we want to win. No mistakes are allowed... at least not to the level of penalties we had even against Norway. There can be no mistake like that with Russia.
ReplyDeleteI honestly would LOVE to see it come down to Canada, Russia and the US. Poetic justice all the way around to have these 3 teams veying for gold.
Nail biter it would be indeed!
... oh yes! Of course I watched it! ;0)
ReplyDeleteActually, it's not a bad looking minivan, but the commercials are God-awful.
ReplyDeleteWhen they make football an Olympic sport, then I'll be more involved. Every night I put the channel on and I'm asleep in 10 minutes. Maybe it's seeing all that snow.
Buck, I'm not sure that the Swagger-van commercial really sucks so much.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I found it to be REALLY funny...poking fun at the modern parental culture. It's everything that we were not, and I find that hilarious.
And, I can almost imagine some dufuses that are being parodied as feeling "at one" with the dufi in the van. They are not smart enough to know they are being made fun of, and are likely to identify with the Toyota van owners.
I don't think it's stupid at all. Then again, I ain't buying a new vehicle any time soon (or ever, I hope). But, it wouldn't stop me from looking at a Toyota if I was.
That commercial just came on NBC.
ReplyDeleteI'm in for ten bucks on the hit, twenty if they film it and put it on YouTube.
Captcha word: etingli
Kath sez: Every night I put the channel on and I'm asleep in 10 minutes.
ReplyDeleteYou're not watching the hockey, then! ;-)
Andy sez: And, I can almost imagine some dufuses that are being parodied as feeling "at one" with the dufi in the van.
I can see your point here and doubtless there ARE such clue-impaired people out there, GawdHelpUs. But I think the ads are lame as far as satire goes. Everyone's a critic, right?
William: You and me, Bud! You and Me!!
I only made it half way through that commercial before I had the overwhelming urge to stab something.
ReplyDeleteI know people like that, avoiding them is high on my priority list.
