More Bottom O' the Barrel Blogging

One of my New Year's resolutions... the only one, actually... was to stop procrastinating about doing things that must be done.  And we have a beginning...
I HATE defrosting the fridge.  HATE it.

This is how it's done.  I'm always afraid I'll electrocute myself in the process.
We're nearly complete, save for emptying out the drip tray and cracking the first of my reward, visible at lower left.
OK.  That's a beginning.  The REAL test will come when the laundry bag is half-full.

  1. Very impressed with how nice and clean your fridge is. Didn't know they still had frosty models out there, so you must take really good care of it. Are you using a hair dryer?? Hmmm.

  2. You know, the easiest way to defrost those refrigerators is to just set 'em outside...oh, wait...never mind.

  3. Dude, what are you doing? Just unplug it and leave the door open.

And why do you own a hairdryer?

  5. Kath: re: good care and stuff. It helps that I'm the only user and I'm kinda-sorta an adult.

    Andy: Heh. Nice try.

Daphne: It would take HOURS for that much frost to melt... and I don't want to let my food sit at room temperature for that long, most specifically the frozen food, which would be ruined. And I own that hair dryer for the sole specific purpose of defrosting the fridge. Are we clear now? ;-)

Katy: I was gonna put off the defrosting until tomorrow... heh.

  6. One of them thar work light thingies does a really neat job at defrosting. Did a whole 23 cu. ft. freezer with one once.

  7. Uh, Buck, there is a whole new world of frost free refrigerators and freezers out in the big world. And they'd prolly save you a ton of money in electricity, too. None of them use the dangerous method of a hair dryer for defrosting.
C'mon, friend, invest a few dollars
in a new one. (It'll give you more free time for blogging, too.)

  8. Defrosting the freezer - good for you! I probably would have thought of something more fun to do - like clip my toenails.

  9. Glenn: I'm thinkin' a hair dryer's quicker...

Cat: Replacing the fridge in an RV ain't no easy task. It's a built-in unit and the hole is a specific size. RV appliances ain't cheap, either. Replacing my current fridge with the exact same model would cost me over $1400.00. God only knows what a frost-free unit would cost, if there is such a thing.

    Lou: Ya, fun it wasn't...

  10. Wow - you live an exciting life Buck. Really, you need to slow down a bit.

Oh wait...you did that already right?! :-)

I'd be all for the item on the top left of that fridge.

  11. Man I HATE defrosting the fridge...with a passion. That hairdryer pic made me laugh out loud. You're as nuts as me Buck! My mates laugh at me for using the hoover on kitchen surfaces because I cannot stand clearing up crumbs and food prep mess on surfaces with a wet sponge. So I stand there hoovering the surfaces and oven top and then wipe them down after. Faster and less messy. Hairdryer on the fridge sounds like a plan.

  12. I don't think they make frost-free refers for campers and motor homes. As you probably know those are ammonia based and work by heating a liquid ammonia/water mix with propane or a electric heater (120 Vac or 12 Vdc) which then passes to a device that separates the ammonia from the water. The Vaporous ammonia is then sent to a chamber where it mixes with hydrogen gas becoming a compound that is very cold (commercial units can reach -80 degrees F.).The vapor then passes through that aluminum plate (Frosted in the top picture) where it absorbs heat from the stuff in the refer, condensing the vapor again and starting the cycle over again. Frost-free refers work similar to a heat pump taking heat from the outside and and passing it to the inside warming the cooling coils thus defrosting the refer. Ya gotta have a compressor system to do that. Faraday discovered the ammonia system and they are still very useful today but you have to be very careful with them as the ammonia is very poisonous. The hair dryer, which you only use on the refer, is a really good idea and I'll have to remember it.

Are you talking about the champagne? I'm saving that for the next time I get laid or for my wake, whichever comes first. I'm thinking the boys will probably enjoy it... Oops. TMI...

Alison: Heh. I've vacuumed countertops before! And my furniture, too.

Dan: Thanks for that. I've never seen a frost-free RV fridge either, and now I know why. The hairdryer IS good... shortens the job considerably.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
