The Wages of Sin...

... are Death, we're told.  I dunno know about that, but I do know sin doesn't pay very well, at the very least.  Another thing I know: The Wages of Stoopidity Are Dirty Dishes.  And lots of 'em, too.

Yeah, we're still froze-up; over 48 hours and counting.  But it's 34 degrees as we speak... on its way to 45, or so sez the NWS... so the end is nigh.  Good thing, too.  I'm gettin' mighty tired of bathing in 88-cent/gallon spring water heated on the stove.  And I REFUSE to wash dishes with said spring water.

  1. Ah, winter! I'm not opposed to going a few days without a good scrubbing, dishes or bodies, especially with 88-cent/gallon water! You're probably not doing much sweating, anyway!

    Here's hoping for that 45!

  2. I've come to realize something about modern photography, and I suspect it isn't altogether true of the more crusty, 35mm-film photography.

The quantity of coin with which one must part for decent outdoor shots is astonishingly low now. That is...forgiving outdoor shots, "press the button anytime you like," panoramic vistas that make decent desktop backgrounds. Not the guy playing frisbee-catch with his dog in the park. Scenic things. Ten megapixel masterpieces can be had for a song.

Indoor shots like yours require a little bit more dedication and perhaps a bigger hit to the wallet. I cannot take a picture of my kitchen sink like this. The dishes are there, ;-) , but anything indoors looks like something the cat dragged in. She & I both have "camera that works" on our Santa-lists...and that is a sad thing, considering the shots of the Pacific we've both been able to snag.

If you have some shutterbug-wisdom to let loose on this, I'd be grateful. You can be as much a Nikon-bigot as you want to be. You obviously have the results to back it up.

  3. Moogie: You're right: I probably never hit that offensive stage as far as personal hygiene goes. But I'm decidedly uncomfortable, which is a personal habit thing.

    Morgan: I'm a Canon bigot, actually. ;-)

The shot in this post was taken with my grab-shot camera, set in auto mode... 1/15th of a second at f2.0. That takes a steady hand to avoid blurring... so I take a deep breath, hold it, click the shutter and hope for the best. The cool thing about digital is as you mentioned: don't like the shot? Delete and try again.

Now... all that said, I've taken some real low-light shots by bumping the ASA up to 1600 or so, putting the camera on a tripod, and used manual mode to open the aperture up all the way with a slow shutter speed... in conjunction with the self-timer. You can take credible shots in near darkness that way. It just takes time and practice.

  4. I may not have frozen plumbing but I have to do dishes every two-three days. I brought enough to Cal City to get by. And it ain't much when the vehicle was/is a PT Cruiser!

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
