As Pretty As They Come...

Johan Franzen, in a highlight-reel goal if EVER there was one... check out the slo-mo at the end to get a feel for the sheer athleticism involved:

All for naught, though, as the Wings go down... for the third freakin' game in a row... 5-4 to St. Louis. SN1 and I have been patiently waiting for win Number 50, which hasn't happened yet. Five games left in the regular season, but it looks like the dream of another President's Trophy has gone by the boards. It looks highly doubtful that the Wings will take the conference, what with San Jose on a roll and steadily increasing their lead in the West.

Oh, well. Number Two has to try harder, eh?

  1. I was wondering if you might post this one. I saw it late last night on a highlight show, and I think I said "holy shit" out loud. Amazing goal.

  2. No doubt, Andy. I was on the phone last night with SN1 toward the end of the game and he said "You GOTTA see Franzen's goal!!" He was right...

  3. Now that the B's have hit a little win streak again, I anxiously await the playoffs!

  4. That is a pretty neat goal and I think a penalty should have been called for with that knee sweep done by the defense man Weaaver. Course in the NHL today the score would nullify that penalty.

Not so in scholastic hockey played around these parts. The goal would have counted and there would have been an Intent to Injury penalty (5-minutes) and Game Misconduct. The league would then give out a 3-game suspension automatically and upon return they would monitor the player for additional "personal" fouls (Boarding, Charging, Slashing penalties)a kind of probation and I have seen on more than a double handful of times a kid sent looking for a new league to play in because of his own style of play was deemed as too dangerous to compete.

When my SN2 played Ice Hockey he was a defense man for most of the 10 years he skated. In most years he was the hit leader on his two teams and while the Captain of his High School team led the way in that department. However, he except for the Goalie was the least penalized member of the team (and one year the Goalie beat him). It speaks to Coaching, what the Boy's learn about how to play and reflects all the way up.

In this play, despite leading the game in points/goals, this Weaver chose to play dirty and I am glad he was scored against (he is a -1 after 54 games). Its too bad his Coach did not bench him for the remainder of the game for that poor shot.

Oh well, I should get off the soap box. You hear this from a fan of the notorious Flyers, who lead the NHL in Penalty minutes. You should be proud that Detroit is near the bottom of that stat!!

    BT: Jimmy T sends.

P.S. I have something cooking on the work front. Should be engineering again next week.

  5. Sweet. Sheer concentration on the job at hand, even in the face of adversity.

On another note Buck, do they sell products of the Red Hook Brewery in your neck of the woods. I bought a half rack of their Copper Hook Spring Ale. I don't know all the fancy words for good beer, but I'm definitely enjoying it.

  6. Jimmy: I agree with ya on the penalties thing... and I like the way your son played. Thanks for those insights. And congrats on the job thing; I hope that works out for you!

Buckskins: We do get some Red Hook products out at the Class VI store... I'll look for Copper Hook the next time I'm out that way!

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
