Starters

Want to kill an hour or so? Do a google image search for “motivational posters.” What you get are hundreds and hundreds of DEmotivational posters… some of them quite funny. Case in point:

Speaking of google… here’s one of the better searches that landed a visitor at EIP recently, or… Why our kids ain’t got no edumakayshun:

Search Words: dodge durango under a car porch

OK… that could be a child using a library computer, but I think not. Kids don’t look for Durangos… nor are they generally concerned with carports. Teachers, OTOH, might be. Just sayin’.

Oh, My… How I DO relate:

“David After Dentist,” from Viral Vids.

  1. What's OTOH?

That kid got the good stuff.

  2. I enjoy the demotivational posters also. Two of my favorites:

"There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots"

    and

"It may be that the purpose of your life is merely to serve as a warning to others"

  4. My favorite question from David: "Is this going to be forever." So been there, done that!

  5. I do hate 56K, well-illustrated by the motivational poster (squint at the picture-- a trick I learned long ago-- somehow the brain smooths the picture yet fills in the details).

But compared to my first privately owned BBS enabled computer, it's not so bad. I can actually read faster than 300 baud.

That motivational poster reminded me of one of Lileks' photo essays. The one where he pegs (so to speak) probably the first rendering of computer "pr0n." To think my 300 baud computer is as removed (temporally) from today as is the one in this picture: www.lileks.com/institute/compupromo/2.html is amazing to me. (Sorry, couldn't figure out how to embed the link.) Maybe not so amazing to you, Buck, if you peruse some of the other pictures in the essay-- business and defense related during some of the coldest days of the Cold War. (So much innovation comes from war, eh?)

  6. Daphne: On the Other Hand

BR: I wasn't kidding when I said "kill an hour," coz that's exactly what I did! I love those things, too.

Doc: Yup, me too. On the same subject... I was ALWAYS paranoid about drooling after being anesthetized... still am, for that matter.

Bob: I linked that Lileks article and added a war story of my own to it back in 2006. And you're right... DoD gave us a lot of good stuff.

  7. Well, of course you did, you like me being a big Lileks fan. I remember reading that, too, now that you got me to squint and smooth the edges.

  8. Oh that was great! Poor kid:

    "Is this real life?"
"Is this going to be forever?"
    "Why is this happening?"

    He's just wonderful!

Thanks for a much needed smile, Buck.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
