Horror Isn't Always Ugly...

I’ve deviated from my usual practice to publish this pic at full-size because of its horrific beauty. Click for larger.

Originally posted by Pierre J to his Flickr photo stream and used under a Creative Commons license. This photo of a French thermonuclear test in Polynesia is one of four. You can view all four pics in this set here. More on French nuclear testing here, including video.

(h/t for the photo: Chap, yet again today.)

  2. Wow. There is something vaguely evil about the juxtaposition of the red light and blackness, though.

Ah, the Perpetually Offended are omni-present, aren't they?

You're right, Jim. That's assuming one wouldn't recognize a nuclear burst if one saw it, though, right? But there's not a single person amongst us who wouldn't recognize the photo for what it IS, and what it is is pure evil. A necessary evil, to be sure (my POV, YMMV), but pure evil, none the less.

Ashley and Becky: Agreed. I found these photos simply fascinating, from a purely aesthetic POV.

  5. The photos are beautiful. But no one ever said that evil as ugly. Why else would so many be drawn to it.

I think we should make a distinction between "horror" and "evil." I think horror is always ugly. Evil? Not so much.

I understand why some folks could be drawn to evil, which can be a moral distinction. Some evil can be quite fun and entertaining. But don't ask me how I know. I'm not telling. ;-)

  7. You are right about horror and evil. I'm not drawn to horror - not even horror films, but evil is a different ball of wax.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
