Sunday

Purloined from Phlegmmy:

I’m not really a Guinness kinda-guy, indulging once in a Blue Moon and only in winter…but. Is this a great ad, or what?

Extra added benefit: Now I know where that pounding in my head comes from on the morning after the night before… Maybe Guinness should rethink their “secret ingredient?” And stop sharing it with the other breweries and distilleries, too.

Yesterday’s “Fun With SiteMeter” moment:

Someone, somewhere, must have linked this particular EIP entry coz I’ve been getting a hit or three a day for the past few on this pic. Some folks are easily amused, I guess. Including, of course, YrHmblScrb, who’s still wondering why we don’t have neighbors like the one in the pic.

So…I’ve been paying very close attention to the WX as the time for my drive north approaches. And I’m NOT liking what I’m seeing. Last night I noticed virtually the entire states of Oklahoma and most of Kansas were covered with freezing rain and ice storms. It’s a lil bit better today, but not much. The weather will stop me dead in my tracks if it continues in the manner of the last few days.

As I’ve noted elsewhere on the blog, the Green Hornet wears summer-only performance tires, and those tires are nearing the end of their life. So: ice, freezing rain, and snow just don’t work for the Green Hornet and, more importantly, me in it. Not at all. I’ve given some thought to renting a car for the trip, which would be slightly cheaper and much more expedient than re-shoeing TGH.

We’ll see what we see, eh?

  1. Yeah, I'd definitely recommend not coming up here unless your vehicle is equipped to handle the weather. We've had some sort of precip about every 3-4 days for the past 2 weeks or so. It's gotten cold enough now that it's just snow, although as you point out, points southward not so much. However, last weekend we got a ton of ice/freezing drizzle/sleet. Not fun, especially venturing out in my nice RWD pickup. Nothing too exciting, other than the part where I almost spun out going up a hill, corrected, and reached an equilibrium so I was traveling up the hill cocked at a 45 degree angle.

Of course, since you aren't coming to Ames, there shouldn't be too much of a problem. However, for those of us stuck here, any sort of precip sucks with Ames' notoriously bad snow removal. They just do not have the manpower or the vehicles, especially since they haven't increased the fleet size to keep pace with the city's development. The end result is that main streets are usually good to drive within a few hours of the snow stopping, but that's only because of the traffic driving over it, not because of the plows. It's ridiculous.

Oh, and I had some Guinness with lunch last week when I went out with some ROTC friends after class. It's nice being 21.

  2. The really bad stuff is suppose to hit us tonight. So far we have had some rain with temps barely above freezing. It is suppose to stay this way for the next few days, but be better by Thursday. Of course, anything north of Duncan is going to be worse. Jesse drove home from OK City this morning and said the streets there were not so good.

  3. Here in eastern Kansas, we have had three days of freezing rain off and on. I love the snow, but I just hate this icy stuff. So I have stayed home in my nice dry warm house ... only been out once in three days, and that's because my husband was driving. Stay safe on that ice, Buck!

  5. It doesn't sound like the WX is all that much fun in your neck of the woods, Mike. Which is what I'm dreading about my upcoming drive. I'll sympathize with ya on most of what you said and emphatically agree with "It's good to be 21!" Yes! Yessir!!

Lou: It looks like all y'all got blasted in OK last night. Today's post (when it gets here) will quote heavily from an AP article about your storm...

Towanda: You and I are doing exactly the same sorts of things at the moment. I'm "in for the duration," what with seeing the handwriting on the wall. All stocked up, warm, and cozy...watching the rain fall just outside my window!

    Abe: Thanks!

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
