Purdy, Ain't It?

The UPS Lady just came and left me this:

Which, Gentle Reader, is a box of Gran Habano VL Churchills. Ain’t it (they) just as purdy as it comes? So very pretty, in fact, that I felt compelled to share some of the artistic details with you. The first two pics are obvious…the overview of the packaging. The third picture is a close-up of the silver embossing on the box top, and the fourth and fifth pictures are details of the art work on the interior box lid. As always, click for larger.

I’ve never seen a Baby Blue box of cigars before. Which goes to prove you learn something new every day. Now if they smoke as good as they look all will be right with the world!

  1. The baby blue box of cigars is very pretty, but the little ceramic hand print behind the box is really cute.

Ah, I wish that hand print thingie was ceramic. It's made out of some salt / flour / something mixture that deteriorates over time, and it's seven years old now. And VERY fragile. I have to take great care when dusting that thing and little bits fall off of it every time I move it.

Just for the record, that's SN3's hand-print...he was three at the time.

  4. Nice! Were they a present to self or from some great fan? Birthday?

Dip the hand print in urethane and let it drip dry. This will also stop the salt in the compound from corroding things it comes in contact with.

  5. Pat: They DO taste as good as they look. A one-time good deal from cigar.com.

Lin: Above all, thanks for the urethane tip! I'm assuming I can paint it on, instead of dipping it? Given the hand print is worth a lot more than a gallon of urethane, but still...my penuriousness sometimes overrides my better judgment.

Alas, the cigars were a gift to my own self, not an offering from a fan. Sheesh...that's gotta be one of the wildest fantasies ever! Fans: who'd a thunk it? ;-)

If any prospective fans are taking notes, the cigar-of-choice around these parts is the Partagas Spanish Rosado. And my birthday ain't too hard to find... (hint: look at the March archives.)

    Mild or robusto?

They ARE good, Mushy...and they're a medium-bodied smoke. Dunno if they'll continue to be available from cigar.com... I went looking for 'em yesterday after I finished the first one and was sad to see they're "no longer available."

  7. While in Canada, there was a smoke shop (what did you call them?) that I passed often. I thought of you every time I passed by it. Do they sell Cuban cigars in Canada? Not knowing if it was legal to send cigars into the USA, I did not buy any, but I considered sending you cigars - it is the thought that counts.

  8. Do they sell Cuban cigars in Canada?

They certainly do. But you can't bring 'em into the US...legally. Now I would never even contemplate smuggling... but I DID smoke just a few Cubans over in Windsor while I lived in Detroit for those ten years. It might have been possible that one or two of said cigars found their way back to my house...accidentally. But never on purpose, of course.

Thanks for thinking of me while you were there, Lou. Cuban cigars are, generally speaking, the best in the world.

  9. I was once promised a VERY fine Cuban cigar as an inheritance. It, like all the other vague promises, never did materialize though. Oh well.

You could try tackling the hand print with a brush and small can of urethane. Just give it plenty of coats to seal it from further moisture penetration and solidify the compound. Maybe use a sturdy piece of wire in place of the ribbon to hang it up to let any heavy apps drip off. I did this with some handmade Tyrolean Xmas ornaments of the same recipe and they survived perfectly until the dog found them and thought they were really cool dog treats 30 years later.

  10. Congrats on your box of baby boys that arrived courtesy of the brown truck of happiness.

  11. Lin: Do ya know what happened to that cigar? It must have been fine indeed if it was gonna be passed down!

And thanks for the additional tips about that hand-print. I WILL be buying some urethane in the near future and coating the living Hell out of that hand-print. It's just one of those things that absolutely, positively HAVE to be saved.

    And...did the dog survive?

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
