Apologies

Every time I try to talk to you
I get tongue-tied
Seems like everything I say to you
Comes out wrong and never comes out right

Chad Kroeger (w/Santana)
(30 sec sample and lyrics here)

Writer’s block. Blog ennui. Whatever. But everything I write these past few days “comes out wrong and never comes out right.” At least it seems that way. As an example, one post that shouldn’t have made the cut was that DUI thing I put up day before yesterday. I had bad feelings about it, even after the third editing pass, yet posted it anyway. Suffice to say “it didn’t come out right.” And that’s an understatement!

Being blocked is a strange thing for me. Back in the day when I literally wrote for a living I was rarely blocked, although it did happen occasionally. In most cases (but not all) the block was clearly traceable and explained by the fact I didn’t understand what I was trying to say. The cure was to revisit the subject and learn more, often by talking it over with a subject matter expert. Once I achieved “understanding” the words flowed freely, if not eloquently. Eloquence came with editing, but it came.

I should note that “writing for a living,” in my case means writing and editing technical proposals, most often in response to a “Request for Proposal,” or RFP. The writing involved a mixture of describing technical solutions to specific problems and the “benefits” of our clearly superior solution vis-à-vis the solution(s) of our competitor(s). All under deadline pressure. And one never has enough time, for one reason or another. But hey! It was fun, in a bizarre sort of way, and I loved it.

But that was then. I’m at a loss to identify why I’m having such a hard time these past few days. I write for real fun now (not bizarre fun), it’s not work. Or at least it’s not supposed to be “work,” the way I see it. Yet writing is difficult, and writing well can be damned difficult. One can string words together fairly easily, but organizing those words into coherent thought is hard. It gets harder when one tries to be entertaining as well as informative.

It’s said that “we are our own worst critics,” and that may be part of what’s in play here. I really don’t know, but I’m working on finding out. In the mean time…please accept my apologies for the reduced output. Both of you.

Today’s Pic(s): From last Fall’s San Antonio trip. I was quite taken by this gas fountain in the courtyard of Pat O’Brien’s San Antonio store and took more than a few pictures of it, at least two of which I posted to the blog. But I missed the transaction going on in the right hand side of these pics as I snapped the fountain. Until this morning. Judging from the body language on display, one has the feeling that everything turned out quite well, nu?

  1. Aww, don't feel bad Buck. As I've said before, I don't know how you do it. I certainly understand what you meant about things not coming out how you intended. I do that so often that I refrain from blogging my thoughts at all!

However, you are a truly entertaining and thought provoking writer, IMHO.
Maybe you need a road trip? A fresh view of things can help. The news has been depressing and I've been feeling a bit on tenterhooks myself lately.
Walter Reed, taxes, public views on the war, the media, tornadoes... Hmmm. Yep, road trip. And the Weather forcast? Looks good. Hey, maybe you've got an early case of Spring Fever! :)

  2. Heehee, yeah, I sometimes err on the side of.... better to be quiet and be thought stupid than to open mouth and remove all doubt. Of course I use the excuse that I am too busy to think about blogging sometimes, but I don't think it would be that much different if I wasn't so busy.

  3. I thought your comments on DUI were reasonable. There're many examples out there of overreaction due to emotion.

As for the free ice cream, it's worth every penny! More, I should say.

  5. I agree with all of the comments. I love reading your personal stories and insights as well as getting interesting info on what is going on in the world.

Sometimes, when I have written something that is heavy on my heart, it comes across a bit too much. I worry and fret over some of my posts. Sometimes I worry about offending folks. Time tends to heal that feeling. I often hope people who read my blog will bear with me, be patient with my ranting, and understanding of my mood swings, and know that sometimes I am just being funny - weird sense of humor.

I just saw a blurb about Ann Coulter on the news. I know you are not a big fan, but what do you think of her seeminly fall from the good graces of conservatives?

  6. Thank you, all, for your kind comments.

Perhaps you're right, Bec. The Road Trip is the Great American Cure for what ails ya, isn't it? I just might do that if the WX holds. SN2 will be on his way to his new assignment at Offut AFB the middle of this week, and he and his bro have been talking about getting together up in Utah around the end of this month. That's a natural. The key constraint: IF the weather holds.

About Coulter, Lou... You're right: No big fan here. I think a lot of the Right is over-reacting with their "shunning" bit, letters to Fox News, CNN, etc. about not hiring/boycotting her, etc. Her remark was bad, but not so bad where her livelihood should be denied. I look upon her as the Right's Michael Moore, nothing more (ha!), nothing less. I wouldn't piss on either of 'em if they were on fire, let alone give 'em any of my money.

  7. Utah! Yes!! (Where in Utah?)

Did you get to hear the Southern twang in the speeches of (Illinois-bred, Yale educated) Hillary and (Hawaii-bred, Harvard educated) Obama during their speeches over the weekend? Hilarious! Josiah and I were cracking up! So glad the media noticed it, too.

  8. Also, Bush's speech at the American Legion was good. Bob Dole and Shalayla sound like good choices for the VA hospital issue, don't you think? He was able to get some news out about the surge, too.

(Having trouble getting my comments through. Sorry if I duplicate any.)

  9. Bec sez: Did you get to hear the Southern twang...

Short answer: "yes." The long answer would be full of snarkiness, and I don't wanna do that in the comments, eh?

Alas, I'm still making the morning rounds and haven't yet begun to tap out today's blatherings. But...soon.

Re: Utah. That would be Layton, a bedroom community of SLC and home to Hill AFB. The first time I went up that way I took the "long way" through Monument Valley. And I just might go that way again, although this time of year is dicey, WX-wise. My first pass through Monument Valley was during a world-class rain storm and I'd like to see it in nicer weather. But I don't want to see it when it's covered in snow...

    :-)

  10. Layton, hey? We always turn off at Bountiful to head for Logan when we take our summer trips.
We drove through Monument Valley in the rain, too. Beautiful, but kind of lonely.
How about Moab? Have you traveled through that part of Utah? Arches and Canyonlands? Capitol Reef? Beautiful, otherworldly places they are.
We tried cooking our Thanksgiving chicken in a campground at Arches one freezing, blustery day. I wouldn't recommend it. I understand your concern about the weather!

  11. the pic of the day: funny that you weren;t going for a "couples shot"... it looks so romantically planned!
Funny! I bet it DID end well for them. Nice.

(going to Utah to camp this summer.)

(nice to see you pop by my bloggy.)

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
