Remember when I told you I had to do laundry coz I was down to “vintage” tee shirts? Well, I wore one of those self-same tee shirts out to the base yesterday, specifically this one:
And Boy-Howdy did I ever get some hard looks from some ol’ codgers. I felt like telling at least one of those guys “Hey, I’m not a Commie, it’s a souvenir.” And so it is…from one of my Moscow trips during the ‘90s. (I have NO idea what the text says, and I've asked around, too.)
I probably would have gotten approving smiles had I worn this one, instead:
The yellow font is hard to read: it says “Miller.” Make sense, now? I love this shirt; it was a gift from SN2 back when he was an enlisted sailor on a boomer...the USS James K. Polk.

Hey, I love the Russki bear! It's got a hammer and sickle nose and mouth, too! Clever! Was it red before you washed it so much and it's turned pink? :)
ReplyDeleteI recognized some of the letters (although they're a bit "artistic") and I'm pretty sure it's spelling out "Russian" (Ruski), in the beginning. PYCCK is RUSSK and then it looks kind of garbled after that.
I know that the word for bear is medved and I don't see an "M" anywhere (it's the same letter in English) so I don't think it says "bear." Maybe the number 30, for some reason?
Anyway, I sure can see why you got some hard looks, wearing that. Yep, you shoulda worn the other one!
My sensitivity for "all things liberal" is a little too acute these days to be able to read much about Lieberman. I really liked the guy. Hope he makes it hot for them as an Independent.
I loved your shot of the F-16. Whenever we visit my folks, we get a thrill from hearing those when they fly right through the Kern River Canyon (near Edwards Airforce Base). My oldest knows just about all the military aircraft by sight. Osprey travel right overhead there also. We've run into them twice just as we reached the summit of Walker Pass.
I've been getting tons of work done these last few days, staying off the blogs (except for yours!)
Bec sez: "I recognized some of the letters (although they're a bit "artistic")
ReplyDeleteThat's as far as anyone has gotten, Bec. I asked a friend of mine, who speaks fluent Russian, to translate the logo for me when I got back from Moscow. She couldn't read beyond the PYCCK, either. And no, it's always been pink, on the back. There's about a 3" square logo on the front, and that version is red.
Re: the Kern River Canyon. My Dad retired up to Lake Isabella and I've driven the Kern River Canyon road between Bakersfield and LI many, many times. It's a great road! I never rode it on a bike, though, and wish I had. I've never seen a V-22, but that will change once AFSOC moves into Cannon, or so I've read.
Your dad retired to Lake Isabella? Well, small world. Did you and your dad ever eat out at the Dam Korner? It's our tradition to have breakfast there.
ReplyDeleteMy folks are in Kernville (my dad and his twin brother spent a summer as volunteer firefighters there when they were kids) but we usually don't take the route you mention. We always head up the Cajon Pass, get off the 15 to Highway 395, through Adelanto, Inyokern and then down Walker Pass. Beautiful trip that way, too. I see lots of motorcycles enjoying the curves and scenery.

ReplyDeletePossibly, Bec, but I really don't remember. It's been well over 20 years since I was last in Lake Isabella. When my Dad got sick he and Mom left Lake Isabella and moved to Temecula to be near(er) the oncology center that was treating him. That was in the early 80s.
I've gone the 395 route, too. That way takes you by the former Boron Air Force Station (now a Federal prison, last I heard), another of my "home-away-from-homes" during my AF career. THAT was an interesting place to live for a year, lemmee tell ya! :-)
