OK…I’m a day late and a dollar short with this. But, in case you just woke up and EIP is the first thing you read (I make a funny, eh?), the Seattle Post-Intelligencer writes that over a third of Americans believe the government had something to do with 9/11. Ah, but it’s not the article itself that’s the attraction here, all the action is taking place in the comments. While it’s possible to read all 300+ comments, it ain’t practical or even desirable…what with fruits and nuts of all stripes drawn to this article like, like, uh…a suitable analogy escapes me. But I agree with this commenter:

I wish we had some psychotherapists working this thread. The level of mental health being displayed here is quite poor indeed. Some of you seem truly disturbed; detached either partially or totally from reality.
As with the other conspiracy thread, this one has gone down a long, dark hole to nowhere.
Scary, to think that roughly 30% of the nation might suffer similar mental instability.
Goodnight.
Conspiracy theorists never miss an opportunity. The comments thread features links to nearly every 9/11 wacko web site in existence, extensive quotes from same, Bush-bashing galore, and the odd Bush defender here and there. Bush defenders?
Speaking of waking up… I think it was about 0830 the first time my (internal) alarm went off this morning. It was raining (again), a steady moderate rain, and the sound of the rain on my roof put me right back to sleep for another two-plus hours. We’ve had a lot of rain lately, including a great, roaring thunder storm last night that lasted about an hour and a half and featured some very intense downpours. It looks like we’ve received anywhere from .5” to 1.5” of rain in the last 24 hours, as near as I can tell, but I’m sure this precip map hasn’t been updated to reflect this morning’s rain. (I’ve bookmarked that link, btw. Very cool.) The incredible amount of rain we’ve had lately is very good news, even though the entire eastern half of the state is under a flood watch. Sure has kept the dust down, though. And the rain has kept my car looking pretty spiffy, too, even though I haven’t washed it in ten days or more. The clean car is one of those
Another interesting thing about our weather is the fact we’ve been relatively cool the last few days (mid-to-high 80s), waaay cooler than the East Coast. Who’d a thunk it?
I’ll leave you with links to a couple of good reads. The first is from perennial favorite Charles Krauthammer, writing in the WaPo:
The moderate pro-Western Arabs understand this very clearly. Which is why
Krauthammer’s very critical of the Israeli government, and justifiably so. Olmert simply doesn’t seem up to the task of leading what has become a war-time government. None the less, this op-ed captures the essence of the conflict and why it is so damned important.
The second link is an essay by Victor Davis Hanson, another favorite pundit of mine. Writing in a Real Clear Politics essay, Mr. Hanson steals a riff from Bernard Lewis (What Went Wrong?) that is none the less pertinent and timely. Excerpt:
For about the last half-century, globalization has passed most of the recalcitrant
At one time or another, they have welcomed all the bankrupt ideologies that traditionally blame others for prior self-induced failure: fascism, communism, Baathism, Pan-Arabism and, most recently, Islamic fundamentalism.
While Hanson is good, Lewis is better. But that’s simply the difference between an essay and a book. If you haven’t read What Went Wrong?, you might want to.
And now I have to attend to life. I haven’t visited the laundromat in two months (just prior to the
I wish you could send some of that rain our way! It's only rained once here since May, and all the crops are dying, even the cotton. It'll be a lean year for farmers this year I'll tell ya.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of conspiracies, I heard a totally ludicrous one while driving to pick up Cody last week. Seems the current administration is behind 9/11, attacking NY deliberately so as to have an excuse to go to war in Iraq for the sole purpose of driving up gas prices so much that everyone will be forced to use the mass transit systems more, which means the govt will be able to raise taxes to support the afore mentioned mass transit systems.
Imagine that...
"in case you just woke up and EIP is the first thing you read"
ReplyDeleteWell maybe not the very first thing. I'd rather blog than a lot of other things, for example I blogged this morning instead of getting my butt out the door and doing some errands I needed to do.... and right at this very minute I'm supposed to be getting ready for Part 1 of reunion. Well, I have 40 minutes and the place is right around the block.
"I’m down to vintage tee-shirts and other assorted odds and ends of clothing."
Buy more clothes?
p.s. Pretty picture. About half an hour ago I went to get my dress off the clothes line and there were two young deer in the back yard, in their spots. But alas by the time I went upstairs for my camera and came back they were gone. I did sidetrack around the yard and take some other pictures though. And I probably would have forgetten to take the camera to the reunion if it hadn't been for that.
ReplyDeleteI drove our guest from Canada to the airport yesterday and am once again able to turn on the TV. (She hates violence and commercialism) CNN was a shock. Very alarming. I feel better this morning, though, and I read a fascinating report linked by Gary Farber:
ReplyDeleteThe Moral Logic and Growth of Terrorism
The conclusion had some positive ideas.
Becky, I hadn't heard the gas price/mass transit/tax connection. All this just to raise taxes, hmm? Well, well. These Republicans have to resort to pretty desperate measures to get away with raising taxes these days... :)
Laurie, I like your wildlife better than ours. Last night, I walked outside and a possum as big as a pig quickly waddled across the path just in front of me. Later that night, just as I was closing up the house, I saw a rat scamper in from the kitchen door, stop short at where my son was sitting at the computer, turn back to the door and shoot away as I came out stomping my feet and saying, "Scat! Scat!" (So that's who chewed on the bananas the other day)
Buck, (nice to have clean clothes again, huh?) thanks for those links. Very on point to me. I read What Went Wrong a couple of years ago, but don't remember it as well as I'd like. Thanks for the reminder. It's a convulted mess, all right. That report I linked did have some constructive ideas. See what you think.
Had you heard that Iran let bin Laden's son loose upon the world? Terrific.
Oops. I drove our Canadian guest to the airport, I meant!
ReplyDeleteAiie, another sleep-in kinda day. I swear it's the rain... We're under a flood watch all day, and that's pretty unusual. So, yeah, Becky, we have a little rain to spare. Packaging and transport will be a problem, though.
ReplyDelete:-)
Great story about the taxes!
Laurie: How'd "Reunion, Part One" go? Are you gonna blog about it? With pics?
Bec: I have a "rat story," too! Dunno if I'll blog about it, I'd have to figure out how to put it in context. Laurie's heard it in an IM conversation we had...
Thanks for the link, it's great, as usual. And yeah, I'd heard about bin Laden fils. There's some disagreement over whether it's true or not, I've read conflicting stories.
I still have a full laundry bag and nearly empty closet. I just couldn't bring myself to go down to the laundromat yesterday. And believe it or don't, I've actually done what Laurie suggested, i.e., "buy more clothes?", on more than one occasion. What's even more embarassing is the first time I did it was before moving into the RV, back when I still had my own washer/dryer, but was "newly single." Life got a lil bit hard after the maid quit...
:-)
Reunion Part 1 went fine. I won't blog it on my SA page, but maybe on 360. One of my friends I hadn't seen in awhile kept throwing me $1 bills every time I recognized somebody. But I kept pushing them back and saying I met all these people just 5 years ago, and you haven't seen most of them in 15 or 25. I'll have to get the pics my friend took because I don't have any on my camera with me in them. Tonight I'll try to do better and ask people to take some of me with my camera.
