VA Compromise Update

I just received the following from the Air Force Association:

VA Record Theft Update

The Secretary of the VA has charged the VA Inspector General with launching a full scale investigation into this matter. The Secretary also has asked the FBI to conduct an independent investigation. We also expect that various Congressional committees will conduct investigations and make recommendations to the President. You are affected by this compromise if you ever served more than 180 consecutive days on active duty in the military services of the United States. You should immediately contact banking and financial institutions with whom you do business and advise them of the fact that you are a Veteran. We will keep you posted on the status of this issue. As we recommended previously, go to http://www.firstgov.gov/veteransinfo.shtml for details. (ed: emphasis mine)

So, I was wrong. It doesn’t matter whether or not you’ve touched the VA…they’ve touched YOU. Words to the wise, and all that.

  1. Any information available about the VA employee who took the laptop home so it could be stolen? Some of the stories I read stated in no uncertain terms that the department has written policy against that, as I would expect.

    Yeesh, I don't wanna be that guy.

    Someone needs to do something very, very, well, not nice to this dolt! Sheesh, telecommuting and having information on 26 million military personnel?! There should be 3 people fired and one fired and in prison.

    Hmmm ... ranting ... I'll calm down.

  4. I haven't heard anything about the guy who took the info home, Morgan. One wonders just how you put a database of that size on a laptop, or even just a sub-set of the info. The file transfer would take hours, the way I see it.

    I saw some Senator (chairman of the VA sub-committee) on Washington Journal this morning spouting off about how he was "...sure the employee violated VA procedures," but wasn't sure if he violated the law. Followed closely by "we need a law," of course.

    NO! NOT frickin' EVEN! If the employee violated procedure, fire him. Case closed. But to put another damned law on the books? I think not. I'll stop. I feel a rant coming on.
