Song of the Day

Song: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Artist: Tears for Fears

Album: Songs from the Big Chair

Year: 1985

Source: Radio Paradise. Check out their playlist.

Makes Me Think of & etc.: Oklahoma City, Detroit, and long drives in the ‘Vette. The song came out during my last year on active duty and was still getting a lot of air play when I moved to Detroit seven months later. For me, some songs are all about the lyrics, some are all about the music. “Everybody” is all about the music, specifically the amazing interplay between lead and rhythm guitars during the bridge…possibly the BEST rhythm guitar work I’ve ever heard. The only other guitar tandem with this level of excitement was Mick Taylor and Keith Richards in the best incarnation of the Rolling Stones that ever was (think: Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!). Another story entirely.

Lyrics:

welcome to your life
there's no turning back
even while we sleep
we will find you
acting on your best behaviour
turn your back on mother nature
everybody wants to rule the world

it's my own design
it's my own remorse
help me to decide
help me make the most
of freedom and of pleasure
nothing ever lasts forever
everybody wants to rule the world

there's a room where the light won't find you
holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
when they do I'll be right behind you

so glad we've almost made it
so sad they had fade it
everybody wants to rule the world

i can't stand this indecision
married with a lack of vision
everybody wants to rule the
say that you'll never never never never need it
one headline why believe it?
everybody wants to rule the world

all for freedom and for pleasure
nothing ever lasts forever
everybody wants to rule the world

  1. Hi Buck, isn't it funny how you can tell where you were when a song came out. It almost transpots you back. Nothing is more vivid to me than the first time I heard a certain song like Layla. Do you remember Traffic?

  2. Do you remember Traffic?

(Curly, of Three Stooges, voice) Why, Soi-tern-ly! (/Curly voice)

I'm a big Traffic fan, and not coincidentally, a Steve Winwood fan. I bought the second Traffic album in 1969, and most of the subsequent albums, save the re-packaged, recycled "Best of" stuff, of which there was a LOT. As noted, Traffic was where I first heard Winwood, and I've given Winwood a lot of my money over the years. I particularly like "Can't Find My Home," from the one and only Blind Faith album. I also bought a couple of Dave Mason albums based on my experience with Traffic.

    Great band!

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
