I Almost Forgot...

... that today is Father's Day.  Well, I DID forget, until I made the blog rounds and was reminded by just about everyone and their moth... err... father.  So... let's honor Dad.

Now here's a little story
To tell it is a must
About an unsung hero
That moves away your dust
Some people make a fortune
Other's earn a mint
My old man don't earn much
In fact....he's flippin'.....skint

Oh, my old man's a dustman
He wears a dustman's hat
He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat
He looks a proper narner
In his great big hob nailed boots
He's got such a job to pull em up
That he calls them daisy roots
Yup... Dad's come in all shapes, sizes, and flavors.  Here's mine (and Mom, too).

I think that pic was taken when I was about two years old* (that would be 1947), which would explain the Air Corps uniform the ol' man is wearing.

* I know, I know... the photo title sez 1949, but that's wrong.

  2. Happy belated fathers' day, Buck. And thanks for the Donegan tune. I'm always mixing him up with Donovan. BTW your dad looks a bit like the actor Ray Milland.

    1. My Mom used to say Dad looked like Milland, too.

  3. Egads! I'd forgotten all about old Lonnie Donegan! He was HUGE in the UK in the 50s but became "uncool" after the Beatles and Rock & Roll. In the 60s. I had never heard of him until I hit the UK in Dec, 68, but one of his songs was big in college that was a popular--amazingly popular consider the way musical tastes were trending-- 60s novelty tune: "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose its Flavor (On the bed-post Over-nite") But I never did know (or took the time to find out) the author/singer at the time as I only listened on the radio. In its way it was quite the hit with the "in-crowd," who mostly repeated its title and first stanza as Steinfeldian ironic commentary on sex.

(Did anything I said make sense, lol?)

    1. Yeah, it made perfect sense to me, since I know the tune. Another of LD's tunes that was a Top 40 hit was "Rock Island Line"... but that was in the mid-'50s when I was in grade school and just getting in to music.

  4. They (Air Corps) had a lot of dress uniforms back then. I seem to recall a light colored one (in B&W) I don't know what the real color was, but it was probably the same as 1505's. What are those badges below the US? I though maybe they were props that flight engineers wore, but I think those were as big as pilots wings. Hmm, I'm wondering how you got to be blond with two black haired parents? :-) Maybe you were adopted? Hee....

    1. That badge below the "US" insignia is the old Air Corps propeller and wings insignia. As for the multiplicity of uniforms... you may be thinking of "pinks," which were light trousers and a dark brown blouse. OTOH, there was a "silver tan" uniform in USAF's early days Ia uniform I REALLY liked. As for the "adopted" thing, you're more correct than you realize. I was the issue of my my Mom's first marriage; my father (in this picture) adopted me.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
