Better Than Roseanne Barr
Operatic soprano Measha Brueggergosman got slagged by hockey bloggers for her renditions of the Canadian and US national anthems at Saturday night's game in Ottawa. This is long, but whattayathink?
I watched the whole thang and, like Paul at the Usual Hockey Source, I thought Ms. Brueggergosman did a bang-up job. Her version of the anthems may not be everyone's cuppa, but like the post title sez: better than Roseanne. But then again, even **I** could sing The Star-Spangled Banner better than Roseanne. You could, too.
Anyone who's willing to stand in from of an audience and sing The Star-Spangled Banner a capella should get props just for the effort
ReplyDeleteI generally agree, except in the case of Roseanne. She should have had the good sense to keep her mouth SHUT.
DeleteI gotta disagree with Ivan...well, not really. He does make a good point. But, this ain't just "anyone."
ReplyDeleteEven though I'm only a mediocre singer, I have a damn good ear. The woman was so off-key that the Senators should have hired LockSafe to fix her.
And...a minor point...one should use the correct words to a National Anthem. I mean, she didn't do as bad as Willie Nelson at the 1980 Democrat Convention. I didn't look for a YouTube video of it (actually I did search for one before posting this, but didn't find one), but I found an article.
I never shall forget that one.
Look in the top left corner.
And, the gal lost me when she started singing in French. I took it in college, and know a little "coonass" French...but if it was as bad in French as it was in English...well, I'm glad I'm too ignurnt to know it.
She WAS off-key, to a small extent. And your "get the words right" point is VERY well taken. There's no excuse for muffing the lines to anyone's national anthem. Period. But overall? I think she did well. As for Willie... well, Willie is Willie. Nuff said there, eh?
Delete"Nuff said," indeed. I remember watching Willie on that fateful evening when Jimmuh was nominated.
ReplyDeleteSigh...
I swear, the guy missed a whole stanza while repeating one (kinda). Damn! I wish there was a YouTube video of that one.
Don't get me wrong...as you know, I'm a HUGE fan of the guy's work. But...I guess it was an omen.
But...I guess it was an omen.
ReplyDeleteHeh. Indeed!
NYUK! SIGH... HEH!!!
ReplyDeleteCrud...
Ms. B can belt it. That was great. I love those a cappella versions by people like her with well trained voices. There's a guy who does the "S S Banner" for the Cubs quite a few times every year who makes the hairs on the back of my neck (I still got a few left back there!) stand up every time he does it. Can't think of his name right now.
ReplyDeleteOne more thought on this. The Cubs thing reminded me of it. Did you hear Ozzie's version of the 7th inning stretch song from a couple a years ago? I think it must be on You Tube somewhere. I think the guy must be missing about 50% of his brain cells now.
ReplyDeleteI missed that, Dan. But I never was a big fan o' Black Sabbath or of Ozzie in his other incarnations.
DeleteAndy's thoughts mirror some of mine. Definitely off-key (even an old metalhead like me can tell) and she blew a couple of words. I could live with that, though. After all, she's just the warm-up act for the game. However, my main problem was the pacing. It was deadly. Pick up the tempo just a hair and a lot of the complaints would disappear, I bet.
ReplyDeleteI agree on the tempo... but I missed the off-key bits. I guess I have a tin ear.
