In a Holding Pattern...
... while waiting for today's Big Game. I'm kinda-sorta watching Michigan beat the Hell out of some third-rate opponent in a blow-out that saw Denard Robinson go out with a knee injury. There goes Michigan's season if the injury is serious... it'll be ALL downhill from here.
We're on the horns of a dilemma, too. Do we go where our loyalties lie and watch Stanford hand ND its third consecutive loss and "entertain" ourselves with the gnashing of teeth, loud wailing, and the rendering of garments to shreds? Not to mention the smearing of ashes all over our body... Or do we watch the no-doubt-about-it better game in Fayetteville in which we have little or no emotional investment? (note to various and sundry redneck SEC homers: this is about the TEAMS, not the frickin' conference) Decisions, decisions... I predict the ol' remote will get quite the workout this afternoon.
It's about the terams when our teams are playing. Otherwise . . . .
ReplyDeleteWHAT A FIRST HALF!!!!! Wooo Pig!!!!
Oh, and after seeing the "red zone" on CBS, I'm really glad we didn;t paint our field red! A little rough on the eyes!
ReplyDeleteDo you ever wander up north to the edifice next to the museum in the middle of nowhere and watch the Rams or the 'Hounds?
ReplyDeleteI spent many a fall evening in that place. Sometimes I was on the field, mostly in the stands.
Wow, Moogie... that was a near-run thing -- my condolences. I was pullin' for ya, believe me.
ReplyDeleteGordon: Nope... I've never seen a Rams or a Hounds game. I should do that.
Buck, I missed most of the games yesterday. But, the ND stats show a much closer game than the score.
ReplyDeleteEverything is close enough, but the time of possession is all out of whack. Oh well...
I only caught bits and pieces of the ND game, Andy, seein' as how the Hogs were so riveting and seemingly on their way to an upset of magnificent proportions. What little I did see of ND didn't impress me much... they couldn't close the deal whenever it mattered. That said, this game was well and truly a defeat. I give myself some small comfort by saying ND COULD mebbe have won both the Michigan and Michigan State games if not for an unfortunate turn of events and one phenomenal QB (in [Big] Blue). Speaking of QBs... I think young Crist will work out well. "Next year," and all that.
ReplyDeleteWell, if you caught bits and pieces, you did mo' better than I did.
ReplyDeleteThings change. Knute, and The Gipper live, die, are recorded in history, and junk happens.
Maybe next Sattidy will bring better fortunes for us fans. I certainly hope so.
I watched my BC Eagles get shut out by Virginia Tech, and I fear for the rest of the season. We don't have a real big-time quarterback, unless there's a red-shirt I haven't seen, and the two splitting duties now are scary slow on the trigger. One is a 26-year-old former minor league baseball pitcher who played QB in high school and has returned to college since getting dumped from his AA baseball contract. The other is a 19-year-old sophomore. I guess I'd go with the sophomore at this point, since he might have more upside. Either way, not much offense to complement a pretty fine defense. Long season ahead for this boy...
ReplyDeleteOh, and OF COURSE, ND plays BC next week. Should be interesting to see who has the higher level of incompetence. If it were at ND, I wouldn't give BC a chance. Being at home, maybe...
ReplyDeleteI feel yore pain, Jim, and mebbe more. It just hurts to watch ND this year. And last year. And the year before... But next Saturday might be good. For me, if not you.
ReplyDeleteI've kinda' enjoyed watching ND the last few years.
ReplyDeleteNext Saturday will definitely be better and brighter for the Hogs. We have a bye.
ReplyDeleteND has to turn around someday, rigtht?
Thanks for the Razorback respect! I'm trying to move on. The Saints sure as heck didn't help matters.
I've kinda' enjoyed watching ND the last few years.
ReplyDeleteAre ya pullin' my chain again, Andy? ;-)
Moogie: I hope ND turns it around before I expire. I wouldn't put any money on that, tho.
Naw, Buck. Well, yeah. As you know, I have come to grips with my unreasonable hatred of The Irish.
ReplyDeleteI'm a conflicted soul in many ways. In The Only Sport That Really Matters, old (even just temporary) grudges die hard.
I really do hope that ND breaks even this season, and that they never invite Obama to speak at their graduation again.
I don't know jack about rosaries, or whatever (I growed up redneck protestant), but I think I'd handle a snake, and drink poison if 'Da Dame would swear off ObozO.
I might even talk in tongues.
Crap! I just wrote the most funniest comment in the history of Blogger comments, and it got eaten up by a 503 (or something).
ReplyDeleteI had been writing comments on typepad, due to the heads-up on the problem, but forgot to do so.
Crud...
That 503 error is a right bitch, innit? It's nailed me more than once, too.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya about grudges... I have mine, too. Like "THE"OSU, Sooners, and ALL teams from Florida... even Little League. Actually, it's the FANS I begrudge. The guys that play are doin' their best to give us great entertainment. Good On 'Em.
Okay, it seems that a few things are evident.
ReplyDelete1) The 503 did not eat my previous comment.
2) Reading it now, it was not the bestest, most funniest comment ever.
c) You definitely have to love the kids that go lay it all on the line. My recent return to the workplace has introduced me to many youngsters. Dangit, there are some great young folks out there with hopes, dreams, and a half way decent work ethic.
4) Most of them do not have great athletic ability, nor the support of ANYBODY, yet they forge ahead, and glomm on to somebody that gives a fig.
e) Those guys that play on Saturday truly do have high hopes, and are using their given talents to both entertain us old farts, and make a way for themselves, and the folks they love. God bless 'em all! Even if they play in the pac-10, or little east, or big 10 (or even off up in the Ivy League)...God bless 'em all.
re: (c), 4, and (e): Agreed. I always point to our Younger Generation when people begin talkin' about how the US of A is in that proverbial handbasket. No. We are NOT. QED.
ReplyDeleteRE: the former minor league pitcher
ReplyDeleteI remember reading a Sports Illustrated article about another two-sport all star, John Elway. He was drafted by the Royals even though everyone knew he wanted to play in the NFL. He did show up in camp and did some workouts, playing third base. George Brett remembers watching Elway and thinking, "geez, I'm glad that kid's gonna play football, else I'd be out of a job."
Perhaps it will work in the opposite direction for the BC quarterback. It does take some time to get the footwork and timing down, as demonstrated by Brett Favre's early performances this season.
