Well, sorta. A couple of replicas... exact replica airframes with upgraded modern engines and various other components... are flying out in Washington state. Witness:
Via a Tweet from Lex, who points us to Stormbringer's extensive post on the ME-262. Good stuff, all the way 'round.
Thanks for the ME-262 link. I've seen one up close and personal several times at the The National Museum of the United States Air Force. You look at the P-51, which was in a class by itself, and say to yourself "What a fantastic aircraft". Then you walk a little more and see the 262 and say to yourself "OMG were we lucky". And I'm not trying to take away anything from the brave men and women who served and won. I'm just saying if things had gone a little different...which makes me all the more thankful for those brave men and women.
ReplyDeleteI happened to catch the story of the Horten on National Geographic not too long ago. WOW!

Wow! Here in my very own state, and this is the first I've heard of it. Thanks for the info, Buck! As a serious World War II buff, I'm going to have to track these babies down, in order to be viewed with the naked eye.
ReplyDeleteAnd ditto to what Rick said.
Rick: Thank YOU for the NatGeo link! My cable company doesn't carry the NatGeo channel as part of Basic Cable, unfortunately. I'd sure like to see that show!
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with you about the P-51, the guys that flew 'em, and the Me-262. I haven't been to Wright-Patt in way too long (last time: '90, or so)... so I'm thinking it's time for a road trip!
BR: We're here to serve, LOL! I'm thinking those 262s shouldn't be too hard to find...
