The first real instrument I was given was a uke. (Hawai'i became a U.S. state the year after I was born, and my mom was very enamored of things Hawai'ian.)

That's quite possible...probable, actually! Thanks for dropping by, Deborah. Do I know you? Like from Fortuna, maybe?
Lori sez: Thanks for the joy, Buck!
You're welcome, as ever and always! Interesting about your relationship with ukuleles, Lori. I never knew!
I gotta ask, coz I'm seeing it more and more these days... what's up with the new (and grammatically incorrect) apostrophe in the middle of the two "i's" in Hawaii? Isn't the original spelling good enough any longer? The Wiki hasn't gone there. Yet. ;-)
It might be grammatically incorrect, but that's how they tend to spell it in Hawai'i these days. I've recently seen Kauai spelled with an apostrophe, too (Kaua'i).
I'm going to Kaua'i next summer (2009), and I'll give a report on apostrophes when I return. ; )

I, OTOH, see it as yet another manifestation of Political Correctness... and I frickin' HATE it. YMMV... and in this case it certainly does.
That left me with a silly grin on my face.
