Some Serious Business

KOKOMO, Ind. — Police posted an around-the-clock security watch at the home of an Indiana soldier killed last week in Iraq after it was vandalized and his family received disturbing phone calls.

The home of Sgt. Rickey Jones was egged Saturday, three days after Jones’ family learned the 21-year-old and three other soldiers had been killed by a roadside bomb north of Baghdad. His family also received phone calls in which the caller said: “I’m glad your son is dead.”

The actions drew the attention of their congressman, Rep. Steve Buyer, a Republican who also chairs the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

There’s more ugliness afoot, as if this isn’t enough. Professional wacko Fred Phelps and his band of merry homophobes are planning to show up at Sgt. Jones’ funeral to “protest.” If all goes well, Phelps and his perverted followers will do some jail time, courtesy of a bill passed by the Indiana state legislature. Jail time would be contingent upon the governor signing the bill, of course. BlackFive has contact info for Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, if you are an Indiana resident. My search of Yahoo News this morning didn’t reveal if the governor has signed the bill, or not.

And finally, perhaps most importantly, there is something we can do. We can all send cards to Sgt Jones’ family to let them know America appreciates their sacrifice and shares their grief.
