Today's Happy Hour Soundtrack

The BEST album side ever committed to vinyl, period:

This particular take omits "Her Majesty" and more's the pity.  But there's an app for that...

I heard this on RP... in its entirety, including the lengthy pause before "Her Majesty" kicks in... just a few minutes ago.  Apropos o' not much... I own four copies of "Abbey Road," the original vinyl I bought in the way-back, a half-speed mastered vinyl version, a CD version, and the kinda-sorta recently released digitally remastered version.  "Abbey Road" would be right up there if I had to name the best rock 'n' roll album of all time, exceeded only by "Exile On Main Street."  You should really read that "Abbey Road" link, btw.  Just sayin'.

My, but aren't we nostalgic of late?

  1. Well, you know you'll get no argument from me on this one. . . ;)

  2. What Craig said. One of their best I think.

  3. STOP IT! Just reminds me of the passage of time and the fossilization process. :)

Tough to argue about your ranking, tho..

    1. You can't avoid or deny it, Virgil: we're OLD.

  4. I was bummed-out by the white album (bunch of over-dubbed caca). I think it even ruined my needle, and it actually sounded better on my brothers needle which looked like a nail.

I did buy the Abbey Road album without listening to it first. I didn't really like it on first go, but it kind of sounded better a few years later. At the time I was listening to Doors, CCR, and Jefferson Airplane. I liked music that was simple, had a groove, and had very little if any symphony backing. If the bass wasn't rattling my brain, it wasn't loud enough.

Today, I like symphony much more :-)

    1. I wasn't much on classical music back in the day either, Christiane. It's strange how our tastes change and evolve, eh? That said, I also bout AR without hearing it first... but I was knocked out on first listen. We have a similar opinion of the White Album, as well.

  5. It certainly is one of the best. Same for Exile. My own personal fave is probably not quite in your wheelhouse (or a lot of other folks.) It is Raw Power by Iggy & The Stooges. But Abbey Road would certainly be in my Top 10 of those I've most enjoyed.

    1. Yeah, "not quite in my wheelhouse" where Iggy is concerned kinda nails it, Jim. I was never much of a metalhead.

  6. I had to buy multiple copies of this album. I kept playing it so much I wore them out. I'd sit for hours listening to it, then trying to learn how to play the songs. At that time Sheet music was terrible, so I would play a passage of the song I was working at trying to learn, stumbling through it, then playing it over again.

Being my instrument of choice is the piano, I was thrilled at the amount of piano in the medley. I learned guitar as well because of wanting to duplicate the songs of this album.

I also loved hearing Her Majesty. It was such a shock the first time I heard it. Like... oh wow! Where'd that come from?

Thanks! Brings back a ton of memories.

    1. I don't think there's a soul in the world that doesn't like Abbey Road, given that it's the best-selling Beatles album of all time. Well, mebbe a few imams.

I was pretty surprised the first time I heard Her Majesty, too. As you say, it was a real "Oh, wow!" moment.

Just be polite... that's all I ask.
