We changed plans yet again and moved all our stuff from El Casa Móvil de Pennington to the new, non-móvil casa today. Granddaughters Natasha and Felicity, assisted by Diego, Felicity's significant other, were the prime movers (heh) in this deal. I mostly supervised and unpacked stuff, given my infirmities and all. So, we are moved. The whole moving thang took exactly four hours and 15 minutes, which is two hours and 15 minutes longer than Lis estimated. "You have a LOT of stuff," said she in something like wonderment that all this shit could fit in such a small space.
Diego, Felicity, and I sat out on the porch after the moving was completed and knocked back a beer or four while I had a cigar. Then Felicity and Diego were off, leaving me to deal with this:
We put the kitchen in some semblance of order and then called it a day and returned to El Casa Móvil de Pennington, mainly to tap out this "better late than never" post... because we still have innernets at the Casa Móvil.
It always takes a move to discover how much stuff you have. Being a family of 6 it had taken me three days to move, with all hands on deck, and a few extra hands as well.
ReplyDeleteI swore that we were going to clear it all out and get rid of half of it. Instead, years later we just added more "stuff".
So, where are you going to display those loverly pink flamingos?
Good Luck with your new place.
ReplyDeleteMoves are serious stuff. The amt of "stuff" that somehow gets lost forever thru several moves is amazing. And the general discombobulation (i.e., "inefficiencies") that attends with breaking down and then setting up in terms of daily routine is no small deal. Robert Townsend of Avis Rental cars wrote several books on organizations. In one "Up the Organization" (written some 50 years ago by now--GOD how time flies) wrote that in terms of corporate disruption and inefficiencies "two moves=one fire." Having made FAR more than "2 moves" in my life, I'm a firm believer..
ReplyDeleteAnd the genuine dread that always attends to major moves gets worse with age. In the beginning there is the novelty of the thing and one doesn't really know what one is getting into. After a few moves, however, it is all too easily contemplated in advance--VERY easily visualized-- just what a chore it will be, hence the dread of what you just KNOW will be an unmitigated, miserable, chore. And of course the service spoils you, as one's individual effort is minimal, but in civilian life? On our FIRST major married move from New Orleans to Louisville, the van showed up at the LAST day on the contract window (necessitating that we stay in a hotel for 4 costly unplanned days) and when the driver opened the van doors the first words out of his mouth were: "This is the worst packed van I've EVER seen!" Oh goody....we had $6,000 worth of damage (in 1976 dollars)
Living like gypsies may seem romantic, but trust me, "oh for the sedentary life!"
I'm confused, it sounds like you didn't just drive your mobile home to your apartment. Any reasons for that?
ReplyDeleteBest of luck in your new digs. Too bad you didn't get a picture of the beer/cigar happy hour(s) breaking in your new porch.
ReplyDeleteOther anon... I'm sure that he still has the mobile unit hooked up.
Hooray! You're over the major hurdle of moving...now it's just all the small annoyances...like where to put everything...getting new furniture moved in...and getting internet, satellite, whatever, hooked up. If you're like me...those small things will drive you crazy! ;-(
ReplyDeleteWhere's the bed, and a comfy chair? Hope you're not roughing it on the floor till furniture arrives?
So, when's the house warming party? I can see a nice scotch, beer and cigar party to kick things off in the right way. Just name the time (and place) and I'll be there... the guy you have no idear who the heck he is.
ReplyDeleteheh.
Hey, shout out to the scouts.... magic wordy thingy is scoutn.
Fan-damn-tastic Buck! Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteAnd you only had to pay in beer?
ReplyDeletevw: hokrabyp - upon first glance I thought it was holycrap.
The new digs look very nice, even post-move. ;-) The pain of relocating from NYC to NC two years ago is no longer fresh, but oy, moving's a pain in the ass.
ReplyDeleteLooking good so far, I'm following your blog :).
ReplyDeleteGood luck fitting all your stuff in Buck - it's always a problem no matter how much stuff i throw away. A year after we moved in almost and I am still endlessly turfing stuff out to make it fit!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a real nice place, Buck. Keep the photos coming as things get that lived-in-loved-in look.
ReplyDeleteKinda looks like the aftermath of a party now... unlike the appearance in the photos in the earlier posts. Moving is such a drag. The only thing worse is having nothing to move.
ReplyDeleteYay! You're into the fun part now!!! How's the new bed!!!
ReplyDeleteI'd find something highly absorbent and put it in front of the washing machine and dryer.
ReplyDeleteBoy Scout motto - be prepared.
Turn off the water when you go on vacation peoples!
Yes, the main water, which is probably in the closet next to the door, or under the sink.
