Understand, Gentle Reader, that I’m not telling the entire truth whenever I post these “nothing” moments. Something about these songs I put up strikes a chord (ahem…) in me, and this tune is simply one of the most beautiful and poignant songs about inter-generational strife that’s ever been penned… or sung.
Hell, “Tea for the Tillerman” is just packed with little gems of song and this is but one. TftT is one of my all-time favorite albums, actually, from a period in my life that was also one of the best....and that would be 1971 and thereabouts. Too bad Cat Stevens Yusuf Islam went over to the Dark Side. That seems to happen a lot, doesn’t it?
Your dark side comment made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteGood tune! I liked Cat Stevens too.
ReplyDeleteInteresting...i always thought it was "Cats in the Cradle"...good stuff.
ReplyDeletejourney to the younger me....
ReplyDeletethank you for the ticket!
and, what a shame what he became.
Cat Stevens...from my Air Force days...liked some of his stuff, sad to say he's a Terrorist supporter these days with some half baked contrived Islamic name...what a waste of talent.
ReplyDeleteJay: My take on "Cat's in the Cradle" was more like remorse for not being a good parent, rather than the exchange between the older father and the angst-ridden son Stevens/Islam sings about. I find it interesting that I can't stand to hear Chapin's song these days... yet Steven's song still sounds good to me. Which proves taste is ALL in our mouths, eh?
ReplyDeleteI mis-spoke in my post, too. Stevens is the only pop star I know of that became a semi-radical Islamist. My comment about "seems to happen a lot" was directed more towards pop stars that drop out from the music biz altogether... like Peter Green... or sell out, of whch there are MANY examples. I wasn't clear at ALL in this space.
Diva, Ash, Pat and Cynthia: Thanks. This IS a good tune, regardless of what its author is doing today. Glad you liked it.
I remember when I discovered Cat Stevens - I thought he was just pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteIf you listen to Cat Stevens music you will see that he was always searching for a god. That he found one in Islam doesn't mean he went over to the dark side. Why don't you try listening to his latest album Yusuf's Cafe Session, you maybe pleasantly surprised :)
